Community Values, Intro to Development and Outdoor Challenge Day!

Phew! Today was a long but exciting day.

I'm Majandra from Peru (a UWC India graduate, current university student and Short Course facilitator), and today I helped organize the OUTDOOR CHALLENGE, one of the many activities on this second day of the Short Course. For this challenge, participants were split up into teams and then ran around the hillside surrounding the Waterford Kamhlaba campus, completing fun tasks, working in groups, bonding, exercising and chanting "war cries" (the silly, non-violent version) along the way. I think participants had a good time, and even though I haven't seen it yet, I hear the view from the top of the hill is breathtaking.

Today we also had a morning session in which participants shared their ideas on what VALUES they think are important to keep in mind for the Short Course, such as respect, open-mindedness, confidence, "preserving nature" and tolerance. Participants then collectively agreed on certain guidelines for taking care of the spaces we are in, including the environment, as well as guidelines for respecting other people's sleep and quiet, among other issues.

So far, we have been mostly focusing on bonding, trust-building, and essentially building the foundations so that we can soon start delving into the different Development topics and controversies... in a way that is enjoyable, respectful, challenging, and overall, a great learning experience for all :)
